Good news for children everywhere. A new federal law (The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) requires that domestic manufacturers and importers certify that children’s products made after February 10 meet all new safety requirements concerning the parts per million of lead. Bad news for small retailers! Basically anyone selling to children under 12 years old have to prove with a certificate that their product meets these new standards. That means people on Etsy or home-based manufacturers won’t be able to afford the $4,000 plus fee it takes to test their products. They will have to shut down their businesses.
